How do I commission a portrait:

It’s really quite easy:

Step 1. Drop me a line – let me know you’re interested – I’m always happy to discuss your particular project. In our initial conversations we will discuss who will be in the painting, the setting and attire of the subject or subjects of the painting, and how much of the person or people will be revealed in the painting (head shot, head and shoulders, head to waist with hands, or full body). This will typically determine roughly the size of the painting.

The size of the painting generally drives the primary cost of the project with a sampling of sizes starting for a single individual at:

9×12 at $1350

16×20 at $3520

20×24 at $4800

30×40 at $12,000.

An additional person or persons and complexity of clothing each add a small percentage to the painting.

Once we agree on the size and scope of the project we move on to the next step.

Step 2. If you’re local and can sit for me I prefer to start a painting with at least a couple color studies in person and then I will take a series of photos from which to progress with the painting.  If possible I like to get a brief sitting at the end of the painting process as well.  If this is a memorial painting we will determine a doable project from existing photos of the subject and photos from a living sibling if possible to get the best sense of the subjects skin texture and hue.

If you are not local I will send you a guide to use when taking photos to get the best possible result.  We can connect remotely via Zoom or similar and I can help you with the process remotely.

Once we finalize the project I’ll schedule when the work can begin and from that point it typically takes approximately three months (longer for larger pieces) for the finished project to be delivered.  I will show you progress shots through the process.  If you’re local I’m always happy to have you visit and see the painting as it progresses.

Step 3. Once we complete steps one and two, and we’ve scheduled the project we’ll sign a commission contract and I’ll require a 50% non refundable deposit.  At this point your place in the schedule is locked in and the timeline to delivery is established. If framing is selected and, if needed, delivery / shipment is requred these charges are added to the cost of the painting.

I love to meet and get to know you in person before I begin the painting if at all possible.  If you are in or around the Boston / Providence area I look forward to meeting in person at the studio or at your place.  In some cases, I am willing to travel further distances to meet with you in person.  Travel costs are extra.

I look forward to meeting and getting to know you.
